From a handful of students launching rockets in Georgia to one of the fastest-growing aerospace organizations at the University of Georgia.
In 2017, a small group of students founded the Student Aerospace Initiative (SAI) to make high-power rocketry accessible at the University of Georgia. Their goal was simple: create a community where students could learn, build, and earn National Association of Rocketry certifications while gaining practical engineering experience outside the classroom.
What began with a few rockets quickly became a place where students taught students through mentorship, hands-on projects, and launch experiences.
As interest grew, so did the organization.
Major milestones included:
First competition finalist in the Bayer–Alka Rocket Challenge
Launch of the structured NAR Level 1 Certification Program
More than 200 students flying Level 1–3 rockets
Permanent laboratory space in the College of Engineering
Development of the club's first fiberglass rocket
These years established the mentorship culture and technical standards that continue today.
In 2024, the organization officially transitioned from the Student Aerospace Initiative to the University of Georgia AIAA Student Chapter.
The rebranding represented more than a new name- it reflected a broader vision for aerospace engineering at UGA.

The mission evolved from helping students build rockets to developing complete aerospace engineers.
Today's organization provides students with multiple pathways into aerospace engineering.
Students can begin with beginner project groups before progressing into advanced competition teams, research initiatives, and open design projects.
This structured pipeline ensures every member has opportunities to learn, mentor others, and contribute to increasingly complex engineering systems.
